Summer Learning Journey

Summer Learning Journey - 18/12/17 - Day 2

Day 2: It’s All in a Day’s Work

Activity 1: A House or a Home?

In the 1800s, most Māori lived in villages called pa. Each village
had many buildings – kauta where people cooked, pataka where
they stored goods and wharepuni where the Māori slept.
A traditional wharepuni had a thatched roof and walls made of
timber, fern, rushes and bark. Look at the picture below of a traditional
wharepuni. Does it look like your house?

On your blog, compare the wharepuni to your own home.
What are two similarities and two differences between a
wharepuni and your house?

Two things that are similar with my house and a wharepuni
  1. My house has a roof and the wharepuni has a roof to.
2. My house has a bed and something to put my food on and
wharepuni has the same thing.

Activity 2: The Rules of Engagement
During the early years in New Zealand, men and women
would often marry at a young age. Women were expected
to have babies and remain in the home caring for their
children. Few, if any, left home in search of work. Men,
on the other hand, were expected to work outside of the home.

These days, we don’t have the same strict expectations
about work. Girls and boys can choose their own path
in life. In fact, I was lucky enough to go to university
and to follow my dream of becoming a teacher!

What is your dream job? Draw a picture of yourself
doing your dream job and post it on your blog.
You could be a doctor, an actor or even a zookeeper!
I have drawn myself taking a picture of a beautiful
castle in Poland because I would love to become a
travel blogger and photographer one day.

I drawed a picture of me filming a movie and my dream job is to be a filmmaker.

Bonus Activity: Special Meals

Back in the 1800s, most Māori ate a simple diet. They ate

foods that they could catch in the water (eg. fish) or grow

on the land (eg. kumara). They did not have access to a
supermarket to buy food for their meals! Speaking of
meals, what is your favourite meal? Mine is wood-fired
pizza. Yum!

On your blog, post a picture of your favourite meal. Be sure
to tell us what it is and why it is your favourite. You could
also include the recipe if you have it so that we can all try it!

My favourite meal
My favourite meal is Butter Chicken because it has rice
and chicken and the orange sauce. I also like it because
it makes me feel happy.

The recipe

ingredients

  • 6 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 2 lbs chicken breasts, cut into 1″ chunks
  • 1 yellow onion, diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 Tbsp garam masala
  • 1 Tbsp fresh grated ginger
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 1/2 cups tomato sauce**** (or one 14 oz can would work)
  • 2 cups cream*
  • salt & pepper
  • lime & cilantro, for garnish
  • naan & rice for serving

instructions

  1. Using 2 Tbsp of butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the pieces of the chicken so each side is browned. They do not need to be fully cooked all the way through. Work in batches, and set aside when you’re done.
  2. Melt another 2 Tbsp of butter in the pan over medium heat. Add the onion, and cook until beginning to soften — about three minutes. Add the garlic, garam masala, ginger, chili powder, cumin, and cayenne. Stir to combine, and cook for about 45 seconds before adding the tomato sauce.
  3. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let cook for five minutes before adding the cream. Bring the mixture back to a simmer, add the browned chicken, and let simmer for 10-15 minutes. Keep the heat low here — not a rolling boil.
  4. Stir in the remaining 2 Tbsp of butter, and season with salt and pepper, to taste.
  5. Serve garnished with lime and cilantro, alongside rice and naan.

  3. Hey there Silia, thanks for posting the second day's worth of activities. You have done a mighty fine job too. I just wish I wasn't so hungry staring at delicious pictures of butter chicken! It is one of my favourites as well. It is just so creamy and scrumptious. I like to get mine a little bit spicy too.

It was really helpful having the ingredients and measurements list posted too, perhaps I will make it later on tonight!

What sort of food does your family make on Christmas day?

    Thanks, Billy

  6. Hi Silia,

My name's Ruby and I'm one of the people who will be blogging with you during the Summer Learning Journey. It's great to see that you've been working on these activities. Well done!

Activity 1: Great work thinking of some similarities between your house and a wharepuni. You've thought of some great ones! What are some differences you can think of? One of the differences I thought of was that a wharepuni has a thatched roof and my house has a tiled roof.

Activity 2: Great work with that picture! It would be a lot of fun to make movies! What movies do you like the most? I just went to the movies to see the new Star Wars.

I look forward to reading more of your blog over the summer.
    Cheers,
    Ruby.
